Welcome!

We are a group of materials scientists/engineers who are interested in creating new materials for various applications (and having fun...). Our research covers a wide range of materials, including polymeric materials, ceramics and glasses, and composites. One of our main goals is to design materials with unique structure (down to nano- and molecular-scale) for specific applications, such as packaging, energy, catalysis, etc. In most cases, the structural design and control are the keys to the high performance of these materials.

 

Overall, we are engaged in four areas of materials research:

1.      Nanostructured Materials

*     Synthesis of nanomaterials (nano-particles, tubes, platelets, porous materials, etc.)

*     Polymer Nanocomposites

*     Bio-nanocomposites

*     Layer-by-Layer self-assembly

*     Thin films and fibers

 

2.      Polymeric materials

*       Fluoropolymers

*      Polyolefins and thermoplastic polyolefins (TPOs)

*      Bio-polymers

*      Polymer composites/nanocomposites and blends

*      Safer/greener polymeric materials for food packaging

*      Polymer processing (injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, thermoforming, biaxial stretching, new processing technique development, etc.)

 

3.      Green Science

*      Synthesize/isolate/derive valuable materials from biomass, such as harvesting silicon based materials from rice husks

*       Polylactic acid and other bio-based polymeric materials

*       Ionic liquids and their applications

 

4.      Solid State Chemistry

*       Layered compounds and intercalation/exfoliation chemistry

*       Porous materials and pillared layered compounds

*       Functional ceramics and glasses

Dr. Sun received his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from South China University of Technology and his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from the University of Alabama. After that, he worked as an Assistant Research Engineer at Texas A&M University. Dr. Sun was a Senior Research Engineer at TOTAL Petrochemicals USA, Inc. from 2006-2009, and an Assistant Professor at Texas State University from 2009-2013. He joined University of Connecticut in Fall 2013.
